Rio Grande do Norte is a Brazilian state located in the North-East of the country. To the north and east it borders the Atlantic Ocean, to the south the state of Paraíba, and to the west the state of Ceará. It covers a total area of 53,306.8 km².

Its capital city is Natal, in the northwest of the state. Natal lies at 5° 46’ south and 35° 12’ west, on South America’s far South-eastern tip. The city covers an area of 170 km², and lies on the mouth of the Potengi river, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

The population census of 2000 gave a total of 712,317 inhabitants.

More than 80% of the territory lies at an altitude of less than 300 metres.

The state’s main rivers are the Mossoró, Apodi, Assu, Piranhas, Potengi, Trairi, Jundiaí, Jacu, Seridó and Curimataú.
